0:08:45 rocket liftoff, probably not as explosive as might expect

0:10:30 3D landscape as suit alarm beeping. HAB small lights (colour and intensity HDR)

0:16:00 why is HAB journal graphics in 3D over his 2D video? (Easy to do b/c graphics)

0:29:00 stars over Earth. Reverb of Jeff Daniels’ microphone at Mark’s burial

0:31:30 Mission Control screens HDR

Just a note: text to introduce characters to avoid clunky dialogue

0:41:30 bass in soundtrack. Used to good effect to add tension when what is happening is not really that exciting. Figuring out Mark is going to Pathfinder rover sight. Mark digging. Etc.

0:51:00 surround effects as they set up hexadecimal circle

Another Note: music moments not as overly loud as a lot of other movies.

From DJ

Opening

  • cool sweeping sounds with he logo

  • Vibrating bass as you look over mars

  • Piano sounds seem to be overhead

  • Orange and reds of Mars are beautiful

2:45  Shut him off

  • The bass playing when you are inside the ship is really nice and is more engaging in Atmos.  There’s a repetitive machine sound and vibration that is more distinct

  • Seat is vibrating

4:11 Wait it out

  • Sounds of the ship blowing around outside the ship are really cool when we go inside and meet Kate Mara’s character Beth

  • Cool use of overheads as you hear all the stuff blowing around above you as all the characters look over head too

4:52 Sand storm ***

  • Sand bowing all around room

  • Awesome bass

  • Alarm going off on right at start

  • Swirling wind and sand as scene plays out

  • Great bass inside ship as ship threatens to tip

  • HDR of flashlights against the dark background

  • Awesome scene and plays right into

8:35 Launch *

  • When they first launch the blast starts dead center at the front of your room and  then the blast from the thrusters comes at you and the sound sweeps from front to the rear of your room. The only thing missing was a blast of air in your face.  Such a cool effect.

  • Then as the ship takes off it passes by you from front center to right rear.  A nice crossing pan

9:12 Television vs Reality

  • Such a cool comparison  here when they pull back from the pixilated lines of resolution of the tv to the real life press conference with Jeff Daniels (teddy Sanders)

  • The sound a similar pan going from the tinny sound of a tv to the full sound of an open room with a bunch of people

14:40 a Vibration

  • Listen to the right side of your room

  • There is a distinct metal vibration coming from a vent or something on above you on the right

  • It sounds like something IN YOUR ROOM IS VIBRATING making you want to get the “Theater Putty”. So cool

17:45 Integrity

  • All sorts of noises going on here as Matt Damon is sitting inside the hut while a sand storm rages outside.

  • The building is making noises all around the room

  • Sand and wind blowing when we are outside building

  • Great use of all channels differentiating the two hostile environments

  • A very engaging scene

18:39 Taking Stock

  • As Mark Watney starts to take stock in supplies and stuff there is some crazy sweet shacking and vibrating bass.

  • Really cool effect. I always love these.  I even leaned to my son and asked if he could feel it too.  He said yes so i was happy

26:30 Woo! BOOM!!

  • Really cool bass in the explosion and here

  • Scene also reminds me of iron man 1 when Tony starts at 10%

27:14 Ringing

  • Listen to the ringing sound in your room even BEFORE Mark says “just as soon as my ears stop ringing”

  • Then it really comes up in volume but the sound was there for like 20 seconds before

30:31 Satellite Time

  • Clear strong dialogue in this scene but listen to the subtle sounds of the world going on outside that room.

  • There are sounds of people walking around and, conversations, paper shuffling.

  • Then at...

31:35

  • Mackenzie Davis’ character Mindy takes something out of the microwave and walking into the huge NASA room

  • as she approaches the room you can hear it coming on the right side of you room fading in from the rear and then spilling into the front and then eventually filling your room signifying that you are now in the room

39:12 Hot Stuff

  • When Mark plays Hot Stuff and it starts out just in the cabin of the the rover and then fills your room. Really cool

53:02 Time Jump

  • When they speed up the time in the movie to show how they communicate from earth to mars with Mark all the sounds around the room are really cool.

  • Voices are sped up amid circle the room

  • There are computer noises sped up and movie around the room

  • Keyboard clicks

  • Ambient sound sounds amplified

  • But there is also like a synthesizer sound playing the and the notes are seemingly circling the room which plays into the circle formula they are designing for communication

  • Just a fun cool scene

58:52 Feedback noise

  • There is some feed back noise in the scene where they first tell the crew Mark is alive

  • It sounds like it is hovering in front of you over upsurge head as the scene approaches the ship

  • Then is bounces back and forth from center to left and right but still overhead

  • Very subtle but really cool

1:04:49 Malfunction

  • Insanely fun scene for sound

  • Banging sounds in all Chantelle’s at different times

  • Explosions is loud and deep

  • You feel like your in there bouncing around with mark

1:12:50 Integrity

  • Testing the integrity if the habitat

  • Plastic and duct tape stressing

  • The bass in this scene really sets the mood very deep and vibrates you and your seat

  • Hearing the flapping noises and the stress all around your room as the scene plays out it scary

  • Then...

1:14:18 A storm test

  • Everything is ramped up and is TERRIFYING

  • Felt like my room was going to blow away

1:53:17 Pop Tent

  • Nice little sound pan from right rear to cent front as Mark throws the pop tent on the ground and is about to inflate

1:57:28 Eject

  • Mark ejects the sides off the Mars Lander and there are nice booms that match the location on the screen

  • The first is center and the second is left

  • Then some nice bass as pieces hit the ground too

1:59:01 It’s a Convertible

  • Cool use of the overheads as Mark ties down the convertibles rag top LOL

2:04:32 Pre Flight

  • Getting ready to launch Mark off Mars

  • Listen to the different details in each location

  • The space ship** is relatively quiet but nice subtle bass and her voice is clear and centered

  • NASA on earth is a room full of people and you can hear the computers?? And her voice is thru a speaker and filling your room. Then at one point the room cheers when they say they are a go

  • Mark in the convertible you can hear some increase bass from The wind and the tarps are flapping all around

2:05:39 Launch ***

  • Awesome bass

  • Shakes your room

  • Feels like its overhead when you are inside convertible

  • All channels doing something different

  • Tarps letting loose

  • Pans as ship passes by going left to front. Right to rear

  • Then the quiet and you can hear the little screws bouncing of Marks helmet as they float by

2:15:54 Activate**

(2:06:00)

  • They blow the bomb

  • The explosion was cool and had nice bass but

  • The different sound around the room

  • The rush of cold air from back of your room blowing over your head and filling the room in front of you on the screen. Was awesome

  • Better separation of channels in Atmos. More distinct rush
